Review the fire extinguisher chart to understand which fire extinguishers to use on which types of fires.
The locations and types of fires vary considerably. Exelgard is able to provide protection for all types and classes of fires. Our personnel are also able to assist clients in selecting the correct fire extinguisher for their particular risk.
The common classes of fires, which these extinguishers are designed to combat, are:
- Class A – carbonaceous solids, e.g. wood, paper and plastics
- Class B – flammable and combustible liquids
- Class C – flammable gases
- Class E – fire involving energised electrical equipment
- Class F – fire involving cooking oils and fats
Exelgard’s range of fire extinguishers include:
Powder (ABE)
Powder (BE)
Carbon Dioxide
Foam
Wet Chemical
Water
Powder ABE

Powder extinguishers are distinguished by a white band around the top of the cylinder and are the most widely used type of extinguisher. They are suitable for fires classed as A B or E
Powder BE

Like the ABE extinguisher, the BE extinguishers are a commonly used type and similarly have a white band around the top of the cylinder. They are suitable for fires classed as B or E
Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide extinguishers are recommended by Australian Standards as the preferred extinguishant for use in electronic environments. Carbon dioxide is a non-conductive and non corrosive agent which reduces the oxygen available to support the fire. As carbon dioxide replaces oxygen, the discharge by personnel within extremely confined spaces is discouraged. Equally as the agent dissipates easily into the atmosphere, the effect is limited where there is air movement.
Foam

These extinguishers contain a concentrate mixed with water which produces foam when discharged. Foam fire extinguishers are effective against Class A and B fires.
Water

Water extinguishers are an efficient and cost effective method to combat Class A fires. Water acts to reduce the fuel, which is burning, to below the ignition temperature.
Wet Chemical

Wet chemical extinguishers use an aqueous solution discharged in a fine spray to the surface of Class F fires. The agent reacts with the burning oil or fat forming a “blanket” which extinguishes the flame by changing the burning liquid into a soap-like substance. This product should not be used on Class E fires, however is effective on Class A fires.
